Outstanding Chicago lounges from happy hour ’til the sun comes up

It used to be that every Chicago neighborhood had a lounge on every other corner (kind of like Walgreen’s and Starbucks today). Most were family-owned with working-class neighbors populating the bar stools, socializing, arguing about the Cubs and the mayor. As a matter of fact, there were more than 8,000 saloons in the city in 1905. Today, the number is roughly 900 and Chicago lounges are offering more than what was the standard boilermaker and Slim Jim for sustenance. Some of the best include the British inspired Dandy Crown to a 30’s throwback with lots of live music, California Clipper.
Modern-day speakeasies are a trend, and if you’d like to hit up an unpretentious hideaway, look for the spray-painted lips mural to enter Chit Chat Lounge. Lovers of bubbles must have a go at the only Champagne bar in the city, Pops for Champagne, and genuine nostalgia awaits at Zebra Lounge, a small, historic speakeasy with sturdy cocktails and live music every night of the week. Cruising River North? Step into Blue Violet’s garden. Hala Kahiki, about a 15-minute drive from O’hare, schools all the tiki rookies by doing it right since 1964. Twisted Spoke also gets props for birthing the bourbon bar and rooftop deck trend a quarter-century ago. If all you need are nice people, comfy seating, good drinks and tasty food, hit up The Long Room or Ludlow Liquors. After all, isn’t that all that any of us need?
