Tanglewood, a music venue in the Berkshire Hills of western Massachusetts and home to the Boston Symphony Orchestra, will be opening this summer from July 9 to August 16. Concertgoers will be able to attend in-person events during the reduced, six-week Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO) concert season (which will be roughly 50 percent of Tanglewood’s usual seasonal offerings).

On April 8, the Boston Symphony Orchestra will announce the complete programming details for the 2021 Tanglewood season under the leadership of BSO music director Andris Nelsons. In all, there will be eight orchestra programs.

The BSO has announced the health and safety measures that will be enforced during the concerts (created with guidance from 9Foundations, Inc. in collaboration with a team of medical and engineering experts, along with consideration from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and local Berkshire authorities).

Universal mask-wearing, physical distancing, hand hygiene, increased air filtration and ventilation, enhanced cleaning and sanitation, and testing and monitoring musicians are among the measures in place. All performances, which will be shortened to 80 or fewer minutes with no intermissions, will take plane in the open-air Koussevitzky Music Shed, with physical distancing enforced. There will also be capacity limits.

Ticket-buyers will receive email updates regarding any changes in the health and safety policies. They will also be invited to participate in pre-season online town hall meetings about the concert experience in 2021.
